The Volkswagen Jetta was introduced in 1979. If you’re looking for a Volkswagen Jetta for sale, there have been at least seven generations, and it offers everything a compact four-door sedan can. Here are some fun facts about the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta.

  1. It Evolved from the Volkswagen Golf

As the small sedan market in the U.S. grew in the late 1970s, Volkswagen decided to expand its options beyond the hatchback Golf, adding a trunk to the design. It was offered as a four-door sedan and a coupe. Using the same platform enabled VW to quickly and easily address demand.

  1. The Jetta Wasn’t Always Called by Its Namesake

The third generation, introduced in 1992, dropped the familiar name; in Europe, it was called the Volkswagen Vento, which translates to “wind” in Italian and Portuguese. The name Jetta was kept in North America. In much of the world, fourth-generation models were known as the Volkswagen Bora. A Bora station wagon was introduced at the 2001 Los Angeles Auto Show.

  1. The Car Was Named After the Wind

VW has a long history of naming cars after trade winds and ocean currents. Some examples include the Passat and Scirocco. The Jetta has received 10 different names across different markets. Other names include the Atlantic, Fox, Voyage, and Clasico. Some speculate the origin of the name is derived from the jet stream that crosses the Atlantic Ocean.

  1. VW Once Had a Street-Legal Race Car

The Jetta TDI Cup was a modified sedan sold between 2008 and 2010. This street-legal racing vehicle featured a sporty body and diesel engine and targeted younger drivers with an affordable option to get a taste for the sport of racing. A commemorative version, the Jetta JDI Cup Edition, was later released.

  1. The Jetta Is Extremely Efficient

The VW Jetta can achieve 40 mpg highway. It also has a 6-speed transmission for seamless acceleration and gear shifting. The standard 1.4-liter turbocharged engine can reach 184 lb-ft of torque and provides 147 horsepower. All trim levels offer the same level of efficiency, including the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta S, R-Line, and SE.

Music streaming is supported, and excellent sound clarity is delivered by an available Fender® Premium Audio System.
