New Features for 2024
For 2024, Volkswagen hasn't introduced any notable equipment updates to the Golf R. However, significant changes are on the horizon for the next model year. In 2023, VW announced that the 2024 model year will mark the final year the Golf R (and GTI) will be available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Performance
Under the hood of the Golf R lies a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine, packing a punch with 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque (or 280 lb-ft with the manual transmission)—an increase from the last-generation R's 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet. Paired with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, this powertrain ensures dynamic performance on the road.
Equipped with the standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, the Golf R benefits from a rear differential capable of actively distributing torque between the left and right rear wheels, enhancing handling capabilities. Selectable drive modes, including Comfort, Sport, Race, Special, Drift, and Individual, can be effortlessly activated via an "R" button on the steering wheel. While the Drift mode offers entertaining maneuvers on slick surfaces, it doesn't quite replicate the fun factor of a rear-drive muscle car.

Fuel Economy (MPG)
According to EPA estimates, the most fuel-efficient variant of the Golf R is equipped with the dual-clutch automatic transmission, achieving ratings of 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
Opting for the manual transmission reduces these figures to 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. However, we consider this tradeoff worthwhile for the enhanced engagement offered by the six-speed stick.
